Go With Your Soul

A very bright and sunny Yoo-hoo to you from southern Oregon! It's feeling very spring-like out here. Usually I'm back on the road, heading east this first week in March, however this year it made more sense to stay and leave in about a month. Because of this, I am seeing what early spring looks and feels like and it's delightful.

And, how are you? Still feeling the last gasps of winter? Or, maybe you're in a pretty warm climate year round ... still, I think there's something about the sense of rebirth in the air here in the northern hemisphere. I hope you are finding ways to feel a hopeful shift.

This is the perfect time of year to be evaluating our well-being. The healthy habits that I've been promoting focus on body, mind, and finances and this week's MQ puts a spotlight on the mind or spirit aspect.

"A rendezvous with your soul will be a very different experience than one with your ego. Choose carefully." I've written about the differences between the Soul and the Ego in the past. It's one of my favorite topics to explore because I still mix up the two "voices" sometimes. Even though my Ego is usually the one with the loudest voice, it can also be a trickster and start up a constant, low-level chatter in my head. I'll hear things like:

  • You don't really know how to do that, so don't try

  • Where does that go? I wouldn't go there if I were you.

  • Be careful. Watch out. Keep your guard up.

  • What if ... "it" doesn't work out, someone criticizes you, things change, you don't like it, you like it a lot, it's not what you expected ... and on, and on

It's exhausting and it usually makes me feel like my head is going to explode. It also gets me into a very judgmental frame of mind. I start criticizing everyone around me and ultimately myself, too. It doesn't feel good and it triggers anxiety. The soothing voice of my Soul isn't usually in my head. It comes from a warm, soft place in and around my heart and infuses itself throughout my whole body, if I let go and let it. I don't "hear" it as much as I feel it. Some of the "messages" are along the lines of:

  • Everything is going to be ok.

  • Things are always working out.

  • It might feel a little scary at first, but just take baby steps.

  • This could be a wonderful learning experience - be open to it.

  • Unimagined delights might be waiting on the other side, or you can change course and go in a different direction if that seems like a good idea.

  • Look for support -- it's all around you.

If you're still not sure which "voice" is coming through, here are some more clues. - The Ego says, "I can't" because of fear. It's doing its job and it doesn't want you to get in trouble. Unfortunately, the Ego sees almost everything as trouble. Therefore, it approves of you keeping your life small, constricted, and diminished. It also encourages you not to trust yourself. - The Soul says, "Oh, wow, this is an opportunity to grow and embrace all life is offering.". It gives a thumbs up to relaxing, expanding, and increasing. It supports you in believing in and counting on yourself. Finally, the Ego doesn't allow for something divine and greater than all of us to be part of our co-creation. In contrast, the Soul lets us know that our God, or angels, or whatever spirits we feel around us are here to help and accompany us. Often they're the people around us. During quiet times and meditation they let us hear the messages we need. Wherever you are in your healthy habits journey -- at the beginning or even just barely contemplating the idea, in the middle of it, or fine-tuning some lessons already learned -- I hope you can calm down the voice of your Ego and find the voice of your Soul. This is what I wish for you.
