Ancient Wisdom for Today

Nearly 20 years ago The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz was published. It's a beautiful design for simplifying life and living a better one. Don Miguel, Jr. has followed in his father's footsteps to become a Toltec master of transformation. This week's Pleasure Peek was a sample of his wisdom:

"A moment of clarity without any action is just a thought that passes

in the wind. But a moment of clarity followed by an action is a

pivotal moment in our life."

Toltec tradition dates back to at least 700 AD when the Toltec conquered the city of Teotihuacan. They recognized the value of preserving the teachings of the

indigenous people. These ancient ones embraced the ideals of peaceful behavior through the study of spirituality, science and the arts. People who follow their philosophy are called "men and women of knowledge".

Don Miguel Jr. not only talked the talk, but walked the walk. He could have acknowledged his father's lessons and gone on his merry way. However, something about them spoke deeply to him and his "moment of clarity" inspired him to take action. He published The Mastery of Self and The Five Levels of Attachment, and continues his work. This is a blessing for all of us to have both Don Miguels sharing their knowledge and advice.

My experience is that there are always new teachers showing up. Sometimes I'm of an open mind to hear them and take in their ideas while other times I'm shut down. I don't worry about that too much because I know that the teachers will keep on coming and when I'm ready, I'll get the next "new" thought. While it can be very exciting for me to have the next Ah-ha!, it's even more important to understand that I am really a channel, in fact, I believe we are all channels. Keeping helpful information to ourselves also keeps us isolated and alone. Sharing with others starts a movement toward collaboration, understanding, and connection.

Scientific studies have shown that when we feel a bond with someone or something, we react with compassion. One way to create that alliance is to open up and play a part in helping others find their way. Even if it's just one, small tip you've received, share it. It doesn't mean another person will immediately adopt it and that's not the point. It's that you're reaching out and offering something with an open heart while also keeping yourself available for the next, new clue.

The next time you have a lightbulb moment, don't let it take off in the wind. Absorb it, treasure it and then, pass it on.
