Try Something New Today To Care For Yourself

In yesterday’s blog post, I shared ways to get started with self-care. Creating habits and adding activities to your calendar help increase your chances of sticking with your new routine. Another way to keep things interesting is to treat yourself to things you’ve always wanted to do. Adding new and novel experiences to your self-care routine is like giving yourself a little gift every day. It’s a great way to stay motivated to do things to care for yourself.

Pamper Yourself

Taking physical care of yourself and catering to your needs feels good! Pampering is a go-to for many people when it comes to their self-care routine. Think of something you've never done before. It doesn't have to be expensive. A small act of indulgence can have the same effect as an extravagant one, especially if you show up, fully present for it. You might consider a manicure or a pedicure. The latter can feel particularly satisfying if you go to a salon that has one of those chairs that electronically massages you while you sit there. A bubble bath with candles and soft music can be soothing, especially since this is something most of us don't very often. As a splurge, you might find a spa that is open and using precautions, for a special treat.

Celebrate Today

Most of us don't buy ourselves presents very often or even give ourselves little gifts (although I will admit that online shopping seems to have increased for many of us recently). Think of something you've been wanting for a while. Imagine receiving it and if it delights you, give yourself permission to get it. It could be a new pair of shoes, a cell phone upgrade or whatever would bring you joy and possibly make your life easier. Giving yourself one gift and feeling like you deserve it can be a boost to your sense of self-worth. It's not just about having one more "thing" in your life. It's about the act of gifting yourself.

Enjoy the Little Things

Self-care really doesn't have to be on a grand scale. The tiniest gestures can be the most meaningful. Indulging in low-cost treats allows you to spoil yourself more often. What are some little things you've never done for yourself that you can start adding to your life today? Have you ever bought yourself flowers? If you have a Trader Joe's near you, get on over and grab one of their beautiful bouquets. It will cost you less than $5. Put it next to your bed, on your counter or table where you have your coffee. Every time you see those blossoms it will give you a boost.

You can also create special moments with food. If you like sweets, decide to make one day of the week "treat day". Choose a special item like a truffle or cupcake from a favorite bakery. Sit down and serve yourself on a beautiful plate and savor the delicacy. You can do exactly the same for something savory if you prefer. Feel free to get as creative as you like.

Adding new experiences to your self-care routine keeps things interesting and can also help make them more meaningful. Novelty will also expand your world and enrich your life and it's fun!
