Take the First Step

Is there something you want? Maybe it's something you long for or hope to do. Even though you really desire it, do you get overwhelmed with the "how" and give up on the dream?

The beginning of a new year is not only about resolutions, but it also sparks thoughts of what's possible. It's a time to think about what might lie ahead and what didn't happen last year. Looking at the big picture or the whole end event can feel intimidating, especially if this is something you've been thinking about for some time. Usually the reason we don't move forward with a wish is because we can't imagine how to get from point A to point B. The solution lies within that unknown. It's a very big leap from the wanting to the getting. It literally is impossible to do it in one, huge move.

Imagine a beautiful meal sitting in front of you -- luscious vegetables, whatever protein you choose, all prepared perfectly. There is no way you could or would want to put the

whole thing in your mouth and eat in one, big bite. In fact, an important part of living a mindful life means slowing down when you're eating and paying attention so that you can really enjoy the whole experience.

One of the best things you can do is treat a goal that you're going after as if it's a gorgeous dinner. You ultimately want to eat it all and you're going to do it one bite at a time. The best part is enjoying each spoonful. It's not about dwelling on all the mechanics or the "how". It's about staying with the feelings and just making the next, logical move.

The best way to go for something is to figure out the very first step in the right direction. If you want to go on a trip, make sure you have a passport or figure out when you want to go and check out what the weather might be like then. If you want to buy a new car, start reading consumer reports about the models that have the features that are important to you. If you are thinking about moving and/or buying a house, check out the neighborhood or start the process of talking to a mortgage company or bank. Or, simply start looking at magazines and create a vision board for whatever is lighting up your desire radar. Get excited thinking about the end result and focus on one, very small step in that direction. Make it easy and fun -- this is my wish for you.
