Thoughtful Freedom

Happy July! Here in the U.S. we just celebrated our Independence Day. Sadly, there were many comments on social media about not having a celebratory vibe and not feeling all that independent. It's true -- these can be seen as challenging times. It's easy enough to find reasons for fear, doubt, worry, despair, anxiety, anger -- do you find yourself somewhere in there? You're not alone.

While it's a snap to produce evidence of this "reality", there's also something we often forget. As Pam Grout so awesomely put it in a recent post:

"...my thoughts do not have the power to hold onto me.

I'm the only one who can hold onto my thoughts."

When we catch ourselves mulling over distressing thoughts, we don't have to hold onto them tightly and become progressively more distraught or agitated. This week's Seed was a reminder:

"Did you know that you have the freedom to change

your thoughts?"

Sometimes we forget that and, at times, it might even feel nearly impossible. This is when we need to stop, take a few slow & deep breaths, come back into the awareness of our body, and decide what needs to be done next. It might mean leaving the space where you are -- that could be a work, home, or social situation where a conversation is triggering you. If possible, go outside or to a quieter place. It might even have to be the bathroom where you can close the door and escape.

If you are by yourself and finding your thinking going off track, again change your environment. Once more, grounding yourself in your breath will help you refocus. You might go for a walk, take a little dance break, or listen to something positive on YouTube.

We are not at the mercy of our thoughts. We can let them go ... replace them with others that we choose ... revel and celebrate our autonomy and freedom in this important part of our lives ... and, don't forget to celebrate! This is what I wish for you.

Feel like your thoughts are making you crazy sometimes? Have you wondered about meditation? This is just one of the helpful tools in my coaching programs. If you want to know more, send me an email and we can have a (complimentary) Discovery Consultation. Satisfy your curiosity!
